Subject: Publication of old Linotype Manuals

Hi Bill,

my name is Volker Trapmann. I'm the responsible manager for marketing
services in the Heidelberg Business Unit Prepress, the former Linotype-Hell
group.

I checked your request with our legal department and we don't see any
problem to publish these old manuals. However, we would like you to put
first the copyright information up on the web and second you should ad the
sentence "Reprinted with the permission of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen
Aktiengesellschaft".

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Regards

Volker Trapmann

Dear William,

thanks for the info. I'm in Corporate Communiations Department and
responsible for the Internet. I forwarded your mail to our marketing people
to be sure - but I think there will be no problem. Personally, I think this
is a good idea of yours and we may all profit from it.

I will contact you again asap.

Regards,

Stephanie,

The type of information that I am thinking of is:

Linotype Parts and Supplies Catalog #22 for models 1,2,3,4,5,K,L
Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn reprinted in Nov, 1934

Linotype Parts and Supplies Catalog #30 for models 8,14,25,26
Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn also around 1934

Linotype Instruction Book, by John Rodgers,
Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn, 1925, 242 pages.

Linotype Keyboard Operation,
Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn, 1940, 174 pages.

Linotype Machine Principles,
Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn, 1940, 487 pages.

Linotype Maintenance Manual, Including The Big Scheme of Simple Operation,
Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn, 1944

Plus other similar publications that I may acquire.

All of the above items were purchased by me from individuals and/or used book stores.

Since most of the linotype machines still in existence are not being used commercially but are being maintained by hobbyists and amateurs, making information such as this easily available will aid in the preservation of some of these old machines.

What is your position in Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG?

Thank You for your attention to and assistance in this matter.

Bill Spurling

Dear Mr. Spurling,

thank your for your mail. I think legally there is no problem putting
information copyrighted by Linotype in 20-40ties on the web.

I would be interested though in what information that could be and where you
would it get it from. Could you tell me?

Thank you.

Best regards,
